The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a groundbreaking electric vehicle that has been making waves in the automotive industry. With an impressive 926 km WLTP range, it challenges the competition, particularly the Chinese automakers. The EQS boasts a 122 kWh battery with a revised chemistry incorporating silicon oxide anodes, a higher volumetric energy density, and compact, efficient electric motors. It also features a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, enhancing both acceleration and high-speed efficiency. The car supports ultra-fast charging at 350 kW, though this requires compatible charging stations and a robust power grid, which is still developing in Europe.
One of the most innovative features is the steer-by-wire system, which Mercedes claims will be the first in a German car brand for a mass-market vehicle. This system eliminates the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels, allowing for a more flexible and dynamic driving experience. It also includes a redundant design with two independent signal paths, ensuring control even in the event of a complete failure. The steer-by-wire system will be available as an option, adding to the vehicle's advanced features.
The EQS also introduces MB.OS, Mercedes' new in-house operating system, which centralizes vehicle functions and enables over-the-air software updates. The MBUX assistant has been enhanced with AI capabilities, allowing for more natural and context-aware conversations. The Hyperscreen, a 55-inch display, provides an immersive experience, though the black borders around the screens are a minor drawback. The interior is meticulously crafted with high-quality materials and exclusive finishes, such as a 'poplar wood with open pores in anthracite' trim.
The EQS is available in three main versions: 400, 450+, and 500 4Matic. The 400 model features a 112 kWh battery, while the 450+ and 500 4Matic models have a 122 kWh battery. The 580 4Matic model offers the highest performance with 585 hp and 800 Nm of torque. The prices in France are yet to be announced, but they are expected to be competitive, with the base model starting at around 106,350 euros and the top-of-the-line model exceeding 150,000 euros.
