While on a visit to his hometown of Ithaca during the Greek summer, Paxinos and his team from the Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) Institute dedicated their time to advancing neuroscience. Despite missing out on a proper holiday, Paxinos and his colleagues prioritized their research, a sacrifice that highlights their passion and commitment.
The result of their efforts is a book that aims to enhance the tools available to neuroscientists studying conditions like depression and Alzheimer's disease. One of Paxinos' most notable achievements is his joint project with Dr. Steve Kassem, which created a comprehensive list of terms and abbreviations for over 3,300 structures of the brain and spinal cord. As Paxinos explains, "Essentially, what we have done now will facilitate collaboration and communication among scientists across the entire spectrum of brain research."
The Similarities Between Species: A Humbling Realization
Paxinos' work on mapping the brains of humans and laboratory animals has revealed surprising correspondences between species. The similarities between human and marmoset brains, for instance, are nearly complete, challenging the notion of human exceptionalism.
"If that doesn't provide enough evidence, then what does?" Paxinos asks. "The belief in human exceptionalism stems from religions, not science. And religions are wrong about that."
This realization underscores the importance of humility in scientific exploration and our understanding of our place in the natural world.

"I'm interested in looking at humans from an evolutionary perspective... Studying the brain gives me the same pleasure as visiting the Acropolis Museum or facing a beautiful mountain range. I view the brain as a location."
